Yep, it’s downright hot outside and there’s no end in sight. Well, at least not for another month or two…
The Mosquito Lagoon’s water visibility is still pretty good in many places. Even though we’ve seen a bit of brown algae blooming here and there I’ve seen no “problems” like fish kills. My guess is if we get through August without major issues we might be in for a great fall and winter season.
For now let’s focus on the fishing. It’s been quite good and most days the trout bite has been terrific at sunup and into the morning. Redfish and the black drum schools have been keeping us somewhat busy after the trout bite ends. On the days these predators decide to school they’ve been eager to pounce on soft plastic lures in both shrimp and minnow shapes.
For days where no schooling fish are found look for a mid to late morning bite on flats with a sand patch bottom. Concentrate your efforts in water depths of eighteen to twenty-four inches. If finger mullet schools happen to be streaming through your chances of success go up. Your chances go way up you find a good supply of pinfish swimming around too.
Be methodical in your casting and swim, twitch or hop your soft plastic lures through the sand patches. Expect vicious bites from predators ambushing their prey (your lure) as they closely watch for their next meal moving in and out of the grass around these clean sandy patches.
