Why do I like April? Because April and the months following offer some of the best fishing of the year. Stable weather patterns with moderate temperatures virtually assure active, hungry fish!

April also means we will have many varieties of foodstuffs for our local fish population to eat. With such a wide variety being available it will tough for an angler to choose badly.

I expect we’ll still have a strong run of shrimp going on locally and live and dead shrimp will account for great catches as they often do. Of course an artificial shrimp is a perfect choice for anglers who prefer the experience of fooling their quarry into biting. There are many choices of plastic shrimp out there and they all work.

With abundant numbers of shellfish and fin-fish like mullet, pinfish, pigfish and mud minnows available a circle hook, length of leader and possibly a split shot is about all the natural bait anglers need concern themselves with.

These fin-fish are also easily imitated with hard lures like Aqua Dream Living spoons, Banks Lures wooden lipped plugs and top-water lures as well as soft plastic lures by Exude. My favorite soft plastic “do-all” lure being the Exude Dart. This versatile lure can imitate a crippled baitfish or a shrimp by how the angler manipulates it!

Water levels usually rise this time of year. Often this means our redfish will scatter about the flats or travel in smaller groups than in winter. Personally I enjoy this because I prefer to cast at singles or small groups than have to share big schools with multiple boats. Too, our secluded back waters which have been too shallow to access by most vessels come back into play. These now accessible areas allow the anglers to spread out as well as the fish.
