The weather has been up and down this winter, so it’s anybody’s guess what February has in store for us. Even with the inconsistent performance by Mother Nature, there have still been some nice catches at the pier, and there should be some quality catches again in February. Anglers will be able to continue targeting the local sheepshead population with fresh mussels being most effective. Fiddler crabs can also be used to produce some quality sheeps.

In addition to the sheeps, you will find that red drum schools still prowl the large flat adjacent to the pier and can be tempted with a variety of live or cut bait. As long as the mild temperatures hold out, there will be trout to be caught as well. Look for trout if the temperature suddenly warms up for a day or two from a cold spell. Lately, anglers have had success targeting trout on dead-low tide when the water first starts to spill back onto the flat.

Be sure to stop by the pier shop where you can find a variety of frozen and artificial baits that have been proven to work. Pier employees will be able to point you in the right direction and share some local knowledge that might give you an edge to catch a trophy. They can also fix you a hot grilled Panini sandwich or cup of coffee to keep you fueled for a full day of fishing. Pick a nice mild day and come on across the bridge to Mount Pleasant to check out what the pier can offer.
