The winter winds finally came to the flats, and March blew in like a lion, creating challenging fishing conditions. April should see the conditions calm down, but still be prepared for a cold front or two. Windy fishing is tough, and a double haul cast is essential. As a guide, I see clients all the time who are good at casting under calm conditions, but 15 to 20 mile an hour winds makes it almost impossible to enjoy the day. Take the time to practice in the wind, and if need be, find a casting instructor to help you before the trip. Fish become more finicky under these conditions, so be prepared for multiple fly changes and variations of stripping techniques.
I recommend an 8 weight rod, or a 9 weight, with 9 weight line, to give you a little more punch in the wind. It may be time to try one of the new textured lines that create less wind resistance and are more efficient in the wind. The bottom line is that you need to practice both for distance and accuracy in the wind. If you can cast 40 to 50 feet from 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock in all conditions, your chances of success will go up exponentially.
There will be plenty of bonefishing action in New Providence to keep any angler busy and happy! Tight lines and great tides!
