North Indian River Lagoon Fishing Report: April 2014

IMGP3789

It’s April, gang and I can’t tell you how much I like saying it. I’m asked countless times by my clients throughout the year “when” is the best time to fish in this area.

My stock answer is “all year, because our redfish and spotted trout never leave”. After that I go on to say “April through June is hard to beat”. This is as true a statement as I can offer as advice to people who can come here to fish anytime of the year.

This timeframe is as close to a spring season as our Florida weather can offer. We are typically past the cold fronts of winter and we are not yet into hot, humid and volatile summer weather patterns.

All this boils down to the fact that our fish become happy and aggressively feed on a more regular basis! Aggressive fish mean we can use almost any type of lure or natural bait we personally enjoy fishing with.

We should still have a local run of shrimp doing their thing and I’m already seeing lots of spider crabs, snails and blue crabs in the grass and it is only mid-February as I write this. More and more mullet will appear on the flats as well as pinfish and hatchlings of our early spawning trout and other species of fishes.

Any angler who prefers to fool a fish into eating has but to look at this list above and find a suitable array of soft-plastic lures (Mr. Twister/Exude) to emulate the natural fodder Mother Nature is providing. Add a weedless spoon (Aqua Dream Living of course) a lipped hard bait and a walking top-water (Banks Lures) and maybe a suspending minnow/mullet/sardine and you are well on your way to a successful, fish filled spring season!
