Alabama Gulf Coast: February 2014
There were a few people fishing in January. There were catches of bull redfish nearshore. Some nice triggerfish were caught on 6 hour charters. February should give a little warmer weather and more activity. Bull redfish should continue to be caught nearshore. Triggerfish season opened January 1st and there are some very nice ones being caught within 20 miles on the 6 hour charters. What an awesome tasting fish. Mobile Bay Fishing Report: February 2014
Winter is here and it's as cold as any winter that I can remember. The water temps are is the 50's. This should be the coldest we'll see this year. Likewise the fishing is as slow as it will be until the middle of the summer. Bait fish have headed for the deeper water to keep warmFeb 1st, 2014
Dauphin Island Fishing Report: February 2014
Well the cold winter temps have been here now for a while now and the trout still remain in the deeper holes in the tidal rivers adjacent to Mobile Bay and the Sound; Live bait will be very hard if not impossible to find so you will need to use soft plastic shrimp and minnow imitations like the vudu shrimp, gulp swim mullet or shrimp or yozuri crystal shrimp and minnows. Youwillneedtofishasslowasyou can and make sure the baits stay in contact with the bottom, jig lightly, and again, I cannot stress enough, if you think you are fishing too slow, slow down more. The do nothing drift will continue to work as well in the middle or deeper parts of the tidal rivers. Something to look forward to in mid to late month and on into the coming month or two is the Sheepshead spawn. They will school in huge numbers around any good structure like the gas wells and any rock piles or jetties. For these, try to find the freshest dead shrimp you can if you cannot get your hands on any live shrimp. Feb 1st, 2014
Mobile Bay Fishing Report: January 2014
Winter is here and December has had it's share of cold. The water temps are is the 50's. The causeway has been flushed with fresh water for the winter. Bait fish have headed for the deeper water to keep warm and that's where you have to go to find specs and reds. At least until the weather starts to warm-up. On cooler days, look in the deeper parts of the creeks that flow into Mobile Bay like Bon Secour River, Fish River, Magnolia River, Dog River, Fowl River, and the Theodore Industrial Canal. Explore the small creeks in these rivers especially where the creeks flow into these rivers. On warmer days, look near the banks, close to deeper water. Work your bait slow and expect bites to be soft and slow. Live or dead shrimp on a Carolina rig on the bottom are a good bet. If you're fishing artificial bait, my favorites are a Mirrolure Glad Shad or High Tide Shrimp soft plastic on a jig head. I start with a white/ chartreuse, root beer/chartreuse, chartreuse/red, or natural shrimp rigged on a 3/8 oz jig head and if they don't go for that I go home and come back the next day.Jan 1st, 2014

As the weather and water gets colder look for deep holes that the fish will congregate in. Fish become lethargic as the water temperatures drop. I like to fish a Saltwater Assassin die dapper on a 1⁄4 oz. jig head, a mirrOlure soft dine, or a sinking corky. Fish slow and low bouncing your lure off the bottom. During these cold days also look for flats near drop offs that will heat up quicker during a sunny day. Fish these flats in the afternoon where fish will come to feed.
