The beaches outside of the port are providing a variety of big fish this month. Bull Reds, Tarpon, King Mackerel, and a variety of shark are possible species anglers can target while slow trolling or drifting with live pogies, pilchards, or greenies in the 10 to 40-foot depths. When targeting the kings, rig these baits on a wire stinger rig. If the other species are what you are after, then tie a 6/0 to 8/0 sized VMC 7385 circle hook to some 60 or 80-pound test Sufix monofilament or fluorocarbon leader. If sharks are your target, put a short piece of #4 or #5 wire in front of the circle hook to keep them from biting through your leader. Inside the Port, flounder and mangrove snapper are the usual suspects that you can expect to catch. Live shrimp, fingerling mullet, or mud minnows are good live bait options to use on these fish. The weather is usually hot so get out early or fish at night and you should have a great time catching fish at the Port this month.
