Port Canaveral Fishing Forecast: August 2013

A variety of species are available to anglers fishing the Atlantic Ocean outside of the Port Canaveral area this month. Flounder will strike finger mullet and mud minnows rigged on sliding sinker rigs or HookUp jig heads near wrecks and buoys. Bluefish, jack, and mangrove snapper are other species that anglers will find near these structures.

Anglers can also find all of these species along the rock jetties and many of the docks located within the Ports basins. Snook, redfish, ladyfish and Spanish mackerel can be added to the above list of possible catches if good amounts of baitfish like glass minnows, mullet or pogies are present in and around the port this month. Rapala X-Rap plugs in sizes 10 through 14 are very good mullet imitators for anglers that like to troll or cast lures for these fish. Try the bunker, silver with black back, or spotted minnow colors as they usually work well. Look for birds working along the surf zone to indicate the hot feeding areas to cast these lures or live baits. Tarpon should still be possible in the 20 through 50-foot depths, so anglers should be prepared with a larger rod capable of handling these large ocean predators if they come across them.
