If the weather continues to be mild like it was last month we should continue to find good numbers of cobia, tripletail and king mackerel offshore of the Port. The kings are hitting drifted or slow trolled live and dead baits like mullet, sardines, and pogies. The cobia could be following manta rays, hanging around bait pods, or just free swimming along the waters surface. Good artificial lure choices include brightly colored cobia jigs, suspending plugs like the Rapala Glidin’ Rap or Subwalk 15, or large spoons like the Krocodile 1.5 to 2.5 ounce models. Anglers will often tip there cobia jigs with a variety of tails that imitate eels, or worms. Two of my favorites are the pumpkin purple chartreuse colored Trigger X “Hammer Worm” with feeding stimulus pheromones or the Bass Assassin Bang! scent infused “Rail Worm” in the gravedigger color. Live pogies, pinfish and jumbo shrimp will also work when rigged on a 6/0 to 8/0 sized VMC 9260 live bait hook. The tripletail can be found around buoys and floating debris and usually like live shrimp rigged on a 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 ounce Hookup jig head or VMC 9299 octopus style hook.
