Port Canaveral Inshore Forecast: March 2014

PORT CANAVERAL:

Cobia should be the main species on every anglers mind if the weather conditions cooperate this month. Bait pods located in the 30 to 60-foot depths usually concentrate these fish and make it much easier to find feeding fish that are willing to hit a jig or live bait such as a shrimp, pogies, or sardine. Free swimming fish are also going to be found in these same depths. Many of these fish will be roaming from one bait pod to another and are generally fairly aggressive if a bait or lure is properly presented to them. Tripletail are another fish that anglers may encounter while searching for cobia. These fish are usually found around some form of floating debris. Use live shrimp or small jigs or flies that imitate shrimp or small minnows on them. Whiting, pompano, and sheepshead should be reliable catches for anglers fishing in the surf this month. Small pieces of squid and shrimp usually work best for the whiting. Live or frozen sand fleas or live fiddler crabs are best for the pompano and sheepshead. Pompano can also be landed on ¼ to ½ ounce brightly colored jigs at time. Pink, yellow, and chartreuse are three of my favorite colors to use. Bluefish and Jack Crevalle should be roaming around the Canaveral jetties and inside its basins near the docks and rocky areas in general. Rapala X-rap lures in the 08 or 10 size with a green back are one of the best lipped diving plugs you can throw at them.

Until next time….Catch a memory!!!
