Power Up

As you can likely tell from my previous articles, I tend to get excited about kayak fishing. In my opinion, kayak fishing is the most fun, challenging and rewarding fishing I have ever experienced. Fishing on my pontoon boat, we motor to almost any inshore fishing spot, launching from a private or public boat launch. However, being somewhat of a lazy paddler with my kayak, I have found myself feeling limited due to some of the launching locations and distance needed to paddle to some of my favorite spots. Planning to go with the tide in both directions really helps, but it still takes additional time and effort to get there. Thus, we decided to investigate kayak trolling motors in an effort to relieve some of the burden of paddling.

After many weeks of research, we finally selected Bass Yak, a small company out of Connecticut. They had the technical experience and kits for all of the most popular kayak models. I installed a 40-pound thrust system on our 14-foot Malibu Stealth demo kayak and have been testing/fishing on it for three weeks. What a big difference it has made! Not only have I been able to venture further from the launch site, but it has also affected the way I fish. Now if the fish aren’t hitting at one spot, I can do a little run-and-gun until I find the active schools. Getting into the shallow flats works great with this system, as you can raise the motor out of the water and paddle in from your kayak seat. You have total control with instant reverse and steering with your feet, while fishing around the dock pilings, and you can keep the kayak in the position required even against the tide. This system also has a remote control option that lets you control it even while standing up.

The beauty of an electric kayak system is the versatility it provides by enabling you to access new areas that would be too far to paddle with your kayak, as well as being hands free. You can even have lunch while going from one hot spot to the other. Call or email me to set up a Kayak Fishing Charter or to make an appointment for an on-the-water demo of our Malibu Stealth Kayaks or Electric Kayak.
