Ghost Stories – Grand Bahamas, Grand Indeed Part III

While conducting interviews from the West End all the way to McLeans Town and Deep Water Cay in the east, I had the great fortune of wetting a line.

Catching Big Winter Wahoo In The Bahamas

I have treasured my visits to The Bahamas since the early 90s, and my last visit was nothing less than spectacular. This last adventure was over the Christmas and New Years holiday to catch a wahoo or two for the freezer. The winter months seem to attract the larger wahoos to the area.

Dana Point

Well here we are in February and it's crazy to think about the month we just had. Fantastic yellowtail fishing to start off the year must have one thinking about where we're going to be in another couple months. We've had incredibly stable conditions to start the year off and it has really played into some great days on the water.

An Epic Hook-Up

Epic is a word that gets bounced around a lot these days. But a boatload of anglers fishing out of St. Augustine, south of Jacksonville on Florida’s Atlantic coast, experienced a hook-up on Dec. 27 that might truly be described as epic.

On The Water With Hobie- Meet Me At The Bar

Early last month I was invited by 13 Fishing’s marketing manager, Jose Chavez, to put their new line of ENVY saltwater spinning rods to the test. Our goal was to land a monster creek snook. Rodney Smith’s Fishy Corner Feb. 2015

February is not only the shortest month, it may also be the most difficult to predict weather-wise. After more than twenty years of writing Florida fishing forecasts, I've come to realize that my predictions are usually dependable, depending on the weather following normal patterns.

Sharks Approach Surfers

Drone footage shows sharks approaching surfers and paddle boarders near the Fort Pierce Inlet in Fort Pierce, Florida. At one point a big shark nearly attacks a smaller shark right next to a surfer.

Modify Hard Baits for Big Fish

Most hard baits have two or three treble hooks. The problem with this setup is large fish and lengthy fights can cause those tiny hooks to open up or tear from a fish’s lip. We all know this loss hurts. The bigger the fish, the worse it hurts and the more likely it is to happen. I came up with a solution for this scenario several years ago while targeting giant tarpon. I adapted my hard baits to use a single large hook. It resulted in the successful landing of more big fish than with the original hardware.
