The hot weather is here to stay and the fishing should get as hot as the weather. The creeks from Melbourne to Sebastian will be a good place for anglers looking to target Snook, Tarpon, Jacks and sharks this month. The Sebastian River, Turkey Creek, Crane Creek and the Eau Gallie River will be good early in the mornings for anglers using artificial baits. Rapala Skitterwalks fished early morning and evenings are great topwater baits and DOA Terror Eyz are great deep water baits. I like to use suspending baits and the Rapala Twitchin Mullet and the Twitchin Minnow are great baits to use in this application. Bait fishermen targeting Snook and Tarpon can find success using live finger mullet or pilchards rigged on a 5/0 t Circle hook rigged with 30-50lb leader depending on the size of the Tarpon.
Warmer temps bring more bait along the beaches and the Snook and Tarpon will roam the shorelines willing to eat live baits and artificials. Greenies, pogies and croakers will all be great baits for the snook along the beach. Jacks should be also abundant during month of June from Melbourne beach south to Sebastian Inlet. If live bait isn’t what you prefer to use, fish the bait pods using Hogy Eels and Rapala XRap 14s. Fish the Hogys deep and the XRaps for the fish staying close to the surface. Snook will be in the trough close to the beaches hanging on the bait pods as well. Keep your eye out for afternoon storms as they will come out of nowhere and can bring high winds and kick up the seas in a hurry.
The bite in the early morning and late eveings along the mangrove shorelines, spoil islands and the flats from Melbourne to Wabasso should be good for big trout, reds and snook. Topwater action will be solid and as the sun comes up, switch to suspending baits or live baits later in the morning. Live pinfish, pilchards and pigfish are the baits of choice to entice the fish early. The tarpon will also move into the Indian River lagoon from Sebastian to Melbourne and can be found around bait pods in the ICW as well as deeper areas that hold bait. Early morning and late evening are the best times to target the Tarpon.
