Cobia that’s what I am talking about. This is the time of year for the cobia to be moving in as they make their way North, some will be free swimming some will be riding on the bigger Manta Rays. I was out a couple weeks ago and found about 30 rays swimming on the surface. These were small rays about seven feet across. They were not holding the cobia as normal but just seeing these creatures is a site to see. I cannot stress to you to make sure your gear is up to par as these BROWN BOMBERS will test you and your gear.
The other thing to look for is the sailfish looking for the bait on the surface. The sailfish are following the bait pods and will be closer to shore as the waters are still in the high 60s to low 70s. The cobia and sailfish will be following the temperature currents so make sure you watch that also on your electronics. Look for these fish to be in anywhere from 50ft to 180ft of water.
Tripletails are still being caught in good numbers, look for weeds, debris or other floating matter. Once you hook into a tripletail its game on. This fish is great to catch on light tackle. I enjoy that the best.
The bottom fishing bite has been fantastic and I look for that to continue through March. Trigger fish and grouper are being caught along with the endangered RED SNAPPER HAHA.
The Mahi Mahi bite has been slower than normal so far this year. I can’t stress enough to watch the waters as you head out to deep water, I have heard and seen Mahi Mahi being caught in 80-240ft. of water, remember the waters have been going through so many changes. I have been slow trolling to get them to bite.
The sharks are going to be a problem again this month as the bait fish move in. The sharks will be here and you will catch plenty of them before you get your prize fish. Sharks are a great fighting fish and will test your strength and stamina.
