Well let’s talk about the summer coming upon us in Sebastian. The one thing on everyone’s mind is RED SNAPPER. Well the time has come for us to be able catch and keep ONE if you want. It has been a long time since that last open weekend to keep this fine looking fish. I ask that you please help in the study that will be going on to ensure that the season will continue to keep it open.
These fish can be caught on many different types of bait, live fish to chunks of fish. The best is live bait, I have found greenies, pogies and pin fish all work very well. These fish will be holding up tight to structure and reefs. Slowly pull the fish away from the area and it will be much easier to get it to the surface. If you should catch an under size fish remember to vent it and return it back to the water as fast as possible.
Kingfish will be moving in closer to shore and that will help the person with the smaller boat. Remember to have plenty of stinger rigs on board as a nice size King will twist that wire and it will not be able to be used again. Make sure your reels have plenty of line on them if not replace it because you never can tell when that 40lb king is going to take the bait.
The Dolphin have shown up, but not the size we are used to. I have had a few big ones come up to the boat when I get into a school of them. I always have a pitch bait ready to throw just in case that big one should come along.
Sailfish are still in the area and should be following active bait pods. This will put a smile on your face when you get that hookup. This past month I have gotten several sails and have seen plenty come to the back of the boat. Cobia are still being taken along the beaches so look for them to be on the surface in the afternoon for best results.
The bottom fishing bite has been fantastic and I look for that to continue through the summer months. Trigger fish, grouper and Mangrove snapper are being caught.
The Big jacks are aggressively attacking top water plugs; this is some hard fast fun when nothing else is around. Moving closer to the beaches the tarpon bite will continue to get better and better as the bait on the beach stays around. It has been hit or miss at times, when you do find them be patient as they will bite your bait and then its game on not ”fish on”.
The sharks are going to be a problem again this month as the mullet run will be running, with warmer waters the sharks will be here and you will catch plenty of them before you get your prize fish. Sharks are a great fighting fish and will test your strength and stamina.
