We are now sliding into April 2013. If we are not worrying about taxes we are still paying on our bills we created during the holidays. But, life cannot be all work and no play. If you have had any temptation to dog a day of work to go shrimping, this would be the time to plan a trip. Why? Real Simple. You are running the clock down and the winter shrimping season is winding down for Volusia County. The breeders have made their run to Ponce Inlet leaving behind the smaller shrimp. These 4” and under are jumping in the channel to hitch a ride to another part of Mosquito lagoon to bury up and grow. If your not interested in dinks (3 inches) or smalls (4 inch range), then time your trip 3 days before or after a New or Full moon. Brevard County is peaking on the heels of March known to be Brevard County’s magical month for Haulover Canal due to the winds changing up and pushing the remaining bio mass through a positive flow dumping into Mosquito lagoon.
Railroad Bridge remains the favorite spot in 2013, this location fills at 100% with boaters hanging out waiting for a spot to open up from a boaters who get tired of waiting for the run to start. In early March, Sebastian is reporting 100+ counts of nice size shrimp so watch the reports at the Academy before you head out. We should start hearing counts being pulled out of Melbourne by both boaters and trappers. We have scouts out throwing mono to see if the summer shrimp are starting to move around due to the warm water temps this winter. We have had no positive confirmations.
What is the largest shrimp I have seen in Oak Hill this year? A shrimpzilla 8” long caught by Captain Don Giehl on my boat. Get your reports posted at the Academy, earn free lottery tickets into report lottery, giving away Costa Del Mar sunglasses, custom made bimini top and more..If your done for the season, soak your mono in fabric softener, and store out of the light. To our snowbirds, God Bless and God Speed, see you in next season and may the winds be at your back.
