South Eleuthera Dive Report – December 2011

Diving conditions in South Eleuthera continue to exceed anyone’s highest standards in December. The water temperatures continue to chill, and it is finally time to pull out my 3/2 mm shortie wetsuit or even a full 3 mm near the end of the month. Temperatures begin around 80 degrees, and by the end of the month we could be as low as 76 degrees. Those cooling waters also bring explosively clear water as the temperatures drop below the warmth needed for algae to grow. The slight drop in temperature also heralds more dramatic temperature drops at much deeper depths (below 200 feet), which causes many of the larger black, gag, Nassau, and goliath grouper to come up over the wall and seek warmer temperatures. Some even friendly enough to pet!

December also heralds the arrival of our famous bull sharks, which are regular visitors all winter long at South Eleuthera’s world famous “Cobia Cage” dive site. Situated in 90 feet of water, and only 40 feet from the 4,500 foot drop off the Exuma Sound, the Cobia Cage continues to attract more and more pelagic species every season. For all of us in South Eleuthera, we wish you safe adventurous diving, and Happy Holidays!!!
