What a season so far for anglers here in South Eleuthera. Fishing has been red hot. Dolphin are averaging 20-pounds plus followed up by a mixed bag of wahoo and tuna. In addition to the dolphin, wahoo and tuna bite, the billfish—marlin and sailfish–are showing up. Marlin are averaging around 400 pounds and it is early! Could have a monster on during the new and full moon in June. I have found that the new moon tends to be a better bite than the full moon. Get out early or wait for a rising tide to stack the deck in your favor.
Dolphin will hit almost anything as long as it is in the water so you need not be too particular about bait. Artificials are working, as well as natural bait. During this time of the year it is important to remember the cardinal rule: “When you have a lot of line out, back off on the drag a little” and “if the fish is next to the boat back off the drag a little”. You want to give the fish a little time to “eat and run” before setting the hook. Tight lines to all and keep South Eleuthera on your “bucket list”.
