April’s currents and weather pattern bring warmer water to South Eleuthera. The water temperature will rise from March’s 74-75 degrees to 76-78 degrees by the end of the month. Four or five degrees may not sound like much but does make a difference. Along with the warmer currents come a diving favorite around the month of April, sea turtles. Huge old loggerheads become regular sightings especially on the wall dives. April is also a good month with a chance to see some of the larger pelagic sharks such as hammerheads, tigers and oceanic white tips in south Eleuthera. The visibility is excellent, typically in excess of 100 feet.
Safety tip for April: Lung over expansion occurs during ascent if you hold your breath with declining hydrostatic pressure and expanding gas will almost always cause lung over expansion. Thus the “golden rule” of scuba, never hold your breath, especially when ascending.
