Spearfishing Forecast – April 2018

Span 12

It looks like most of the migratory fish: cobia, king and Spanish mackerel & bonita have all showed up early this year. The water temp rising faster than usual for this time of year could be the reason for the pelagic fish showing up about a month early. Normally we see water temps in the mid-60s at this time but with this sudden rise in temp the water should be the mid-70s. The visibility should still be good at 30’to 50’ depending on the weather and winds. As the temps move up, the AJs, snappers, and other game fish should be moving and feeding from wreck to wreck and hard bottom areas more, making them easier to find and more fun to shoot. Remember, with warmer water fish tend to move quicker and faster, so you may have to adjust your aim for these fish. This month we should find out what the red snapper season is so pay close attention to FWC rules. With all the new fish coming to town your fish ID is paramount so you don’t get in trouble with the law.

In keeping with the series of making emergency procedures safety cards, another set of cards to have would cover FIRST AID…for example:

  1. ABCs (Air way, Breathing, circulation) what & how to check
  2. Oxygen: how to use it, write the procedure down just in case you are the one that needs it.
  3. Bleeding: how to treat different types
  4. Wildlife wounds: how to treat cuts, bites, stabs, poisons, and venoms etc.

There are many other things you can put on your cards, but this will get you started.

As always, Plan your Dive and Dive your Plan!

Thanks for reading.
