Surf Fishing Forecast: March 2014

You just can’t keep a good Scout down: Corey, broken leg and on crutches, learned to cast from a seated position and caught two blues at a time.

Warming waters and a major change to the spring wind and weather patterns should increase catches for the March surf anglers. March is definitely a transitional period, which could light up the pompano bite we have been anticipating for a while this year.

Several tips and suggestions: 1) when the bite is slow, try to change baits often and cover as much water as you can with your casts. 2) I prefer long rods (12/13 ft.) for distance and a shorter (11 ft.) rod for close in casting. 3) Stop in and visit the folks at the local bait and tackle shop nearest to your fishing destination. They are more than willing to share useful information. 4) When surf fishing, fresh bait can equal fish just about every time. 5) I will be fishing for pompano, whiting, mackerel, drum and sheepshead during March.

One last tip from a winter visitor and it’s worth repeating. He suggests getting the clam strip sandy before you put it on the hook. This helps in handling the slippery clam and provides greater control while getting it on the hook. The sand washes off when the bait hit the water during the cast.

In March, Rodney Smith and I will begin rapping up our Surf Fishing Workshop for this year. If you are interested, now is the time to call or email and get registered for one of our final programs.

Workshop Description:
An excellent opportunity for you to greatly enhance the value of your next surf or inlet fishing trip. The $50 fee will not only cover the surf & inlet fishing fundamentals and skills needed to improve one’s catching, it will also detail the areas where you can save money and time while pursuing this outdoor activity. Each angler attending will also receive a free $30 gift tackle bag. We will share the knowledge and fine points needed to catch snook, pompano, whiting, drum, flounder, mackerel, and a host of other species. All the workshops are on Wednesdays from 9-1PM except for Fish on Fire, in Orlando which is from 6-9PM and includes a Free Fish Fry as part of the workshop.
