April’s surf fishing is terrible and you shouldn’t waste your time… April fools!! Now let’s get serious here April will bring an abundance of opportunities for surf fishing anglers along the central east coast of Florida. As the water temperature warms from winter patterns change will happen quickly. Baitfish will become more present in the surf and that brings with it a host of predators lying in wait. Snook, flounder, and redfish will be primarily targeted in the trough directly off the shoreline. These predatory species will use the wash zone to concentrate and disorient baitfish swimming along the trough.
The trough is the immediate deep water you encounter only feet from the shore. When targeting these species I always recommend diving plugs that swim suspended or skitter near the bottom on retrieval creating commotion and frequency. Another option being swim baits, these lures mirror and mimic the present baitfish in the area and can be retrieved a variety of ways effectively. Throw the standard spoon or buck tail in the mix and you have a perfect combination of artificial lures to target these species. For flounder try areas that have a deeper trough or rocky areas with sand spits that currents runout. Small finger mullet rigged on a fish finder rig with a one to two ounce weight will catch all the above species effectively.
The usual cast of characters being pompano, whiting, black drum, and croakers will be looking for crustaceans on a pompano rig. Have your surf fishing setup diversified to increase your species list probabilities on each particular day.
Now go get tight on a fish!!!
