Every year around this time, I start to get the question frequently asked, “What type of Kayak should I buy?” Even more so in the last two years, as more people have flocked to enjoying the great outdoors! Well, since there are a vast variety of kayaks, the first thing you need to do is determine your main objective in purchasing one; for instance, leisure, sport fishing or a little of both. Next, do your due diligence in research and reviews, so your new kayak will best and happily suit your needs. My first suggestion to find out about a particular kayak, is to head over to your local kayak store and sign up for a “demo day” as most stores offer this service. This way you get to try out a few different options before purchase and make sure you’re making the right investment in your new hobby.
You definitely don’t want to blindly purchase a cheap kayak, have a terrible experience and give up before really giving it a chance. Although kayaking may not be for everyone, a fair chance can lead to a lifetime of enjoyment. After you have found your kayak, investing in a quality paddle is key. If you plan to kayak often, you will need to be sure to have a paddle that is a good fit. Your local kayak stores are a great resource to look for guidance.
Lastly, safety is always a priority and buying a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) is very important. A PFD and whistle are both necessities when kayaking. Not only is it required by law to have one with you on your kayak, it could save your life. They come in all shapes and sizes too.
Kayaking and fishing can be an absolute blast if you know how to correctly join them together. If you are new to it all, book a guide to help you learn the tricks of the trade, or explore your new hobby independently. Main thing is to enjoy yourself, respect the waters and your fellow angler. Tight lines and Tight Knots to everyone!
