Say goodbye to the wahoo, becausethe bluefin tuna should be migrating through Bimini during June along withblackfin and yellowfin. With all the bait around (blackfin and skipjack tuna), blue marlin should follow. The yellowfin should be in the 30- to 70-pound range and there should be some big bluefin in the “hundreds of pounds!” Expect to find some large dolphin in the mix as well. For marlin, try a black and red small lure with a horse ballyhoo. If you want to be ready for anything, go with tackle in the 50- to 80-pound line class for marlin and yellowfin tuna and 130-pound for bluefin tuna. Without giving away any ‘captain’s secrets’ you will want to fish south of Bimini off Cat Cay for bluefin, and north of Bimini off Great Isaac Light for yellowfin and marlin.
Bottom fishing should be excellent in June. Try deep dropping in 700 to 1,200 feet of water with electric reels for yelloweye, black and queen snapper, and mystic grouper. If targeting yellowtail snapper, chumming in 70 to 80 feet of water will also be good on a full moon. Mutton snapper fishing with chunk bait on wrecks, again on a full moon, should be excellent.
June will be a great time to make the Bimini run from anywhere in South Florida.
