This month the trout, whiting, black drum, and redfish can move around a lot. One day they will be holding in the deepest holes they can find to hide from the cold weather and two days later be sunning on open flats once a warming trends takes place. You best bet is to fish slowly with paddle or shrimp tails rigged on a 1/16 to 1⁄4 ounce jig head along drop offs or mangrove covered shorelines. I like to use the Saltwater Assassin 4 inch sea shad tails in the Slammin’ Chicken, salt-n-pepper chartreuse tail, Houdini, Pink Ghosts, or Texas Roach colors depending on water clarity and cloud cover each day. One of my other “go to” lures is the Trigger X 4-inch shrimp rigged on these same jig heads. They grey ghosts color will work on all of the previously mentioned species. The redfish will often become a little less cooperative than I would like on some days and about the only way I’ve found to get them to bite is to use cut ladyfish or mullet on a VMC 7387 2/0 to 4/0 sized circle hook. Leave the offering on the bottom and the rod in your boats rod holder with the drag set at about 4 pounds of pressure before it starts to slip. When the fish strikes, wait until the rod is bent over and line is being pulled off your reel before picking the rod up to fight the fish. This will allow the hook to properly set in the corner of the fishes mouth so that you don’t loose it during the fight.
