For those wishing to dive with a limited number of divers, early December is the perfect time to head to Abaco. As the month progresses toward the holidays, more visitors arrive and the number of divers and snorkelers increases. We are fortunate that Great Abaco offers diverse diving, so with the unpredictable weather that winter can bring, there are several diving options available. Should windy weather prevent you from traveling to the reef by boat, there is drift and blue hole diving accessible by land transportation. Air temperatures in December range from 67 degrees at night to 79 degrees during the day. Water temperature averages 76 degrees so a 3 mm wetsuit is suggested to provide adequate thermal protection. Water clarity is normally excellent with visibility at least 100 feet. This time of year provides for frequent encounters with eagle rays, sharks and turtles and, of course, our unique coral formations provide the perfect location to observe the abundance of tropical fish. According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the Full Cold Moon is on Saturday, December 10 at 9:36 a.m. EST. Night diving by the light of a full moon is a dive to experience at least once in a lifetime.
