March is upon us, which means summer is right around the corner! We are looking forward to the longer, warmer days, although this has been a very mild and warm winter here in Abaco.

March begins the tourism season for 2012, not only with the arrival of the Snowbirds escaping the snow-bound North, but also with the Spring Breakers visiting from various colleges and universities. As the height of the season begins in May, March and April are great months to become a certified diver. March 8th will bring us the Full ‘Worm’ Moon, known as such due to earthworms (and robins) appearing as the ground thaws in northern climates. This is the last full moon of winter, as spring officially arrives on March 20th. Air temperatures range from 67 degrees at night to 78 degrees during the day. Although the water temperature is on its way up, averaging 75 degrees, we still suggest the thermal protection a wet suit provides. With the absence of algae growth, water clarity for diving in March is outstanding, and visibility exceeds 100 plus feet. The reefs are alive with all the usual tropical reef critters, but there are more frequent encounters with eagle rays, sharks, turtles and even dolphin. The angle of the sunlight enhances the colors on the coral heads along the reef, and provides the perfect location to observe the abundant variety of juvenile tropical fish following spawning season. Pack your bags, purchase your airline ticket and plot your destination for 26°32’48″N and 77°03’06″W. See you in Abaco!
