South Abaco is holding a number of surprises for us this time of year. February has been great, full of good weather and calm days for fishing, the bite is on with yellowfin tuna, dolphin and wahoo coming in over 60 pounds.
Trolling with ballyhoo, and your standard “cedar plug”, along with some great wahoo lures (double hooked of course), you can expect to find the same for March. The weed lines will be ripe with dolphin. The frigate birds have been feeding off of the jumping tuna in the early afternoon hours. South Abaco has been ripe with schools of fish. Using your conventional rods and reels, and the occasional fly rod, you can surely catch your fill for the day. Hugging the edge of the drop off, staying in approximately 250 to 400 feet of water you will have your best chance at your intended target. The cold fronts seem to be weak in the area so far this year, so seeing the migration of the tuna around this time of year has thrown us for a loop. A very happy one! In my 16 years in Abaco I have never caught a yellowfin this time of year.
The deep dropping is a favorite amongst locals and we are bringing up some black snapper.
Now, the run to the Hole in the Wall is broken up nicely by the opening of Schooner Bay and Blackfly Lodge. When you are out for that early morning bite and things calm down mid-day, you can take that 25 minute run back to the north and tie up at the dock in the harbor and have a cold one and some lunch.
Until next time, tight lines my friends. See you in Abaco soon.
