Abaco Offshore Fishing Forecast – April 2011

The wind has decreased and temperatures have risen. In March, wahoo were still being reported and the dolphin began to show up. April promises to increase dolphin, wahoo and tuna landings, as well as marlin tags and releases.

Bottom fishing for grouper and snapper is always good in Abaco, however, it’s all about location, location, location. Most locals, however, can guide you to the right spot.

For baits, rigged ballyhoo with a plastic skirt is a favorite. Live bait works well too. Choose the size of your trolling lure based upon the species you’re targeting or what’s currently running.

For tackle, use anything from a medium light 7 spinning rod to 130-pound rods.

If you’re traveling light and don’t want to carry your tackle with you to Abaco, a few outfitters like Island Boy Tackle and Marine (242-367-3228) in Marsh Harbour rent rods and reels, but call in advance to reserve so that you won’t be disappointed.

A number of offshore tournaments are on the calendar this month. You just may want to hit the docks of Abaco Beach Resort, Treasure Cay Resort, and Lighthouse Marina to find out what’s hitting and where, as well as what bait is working best.

May the month of April bring you great fishing!
