With the annual return of hammerheads and other sharks close to our shores and on our shallow reefs, February offers some great diving in between cold fronts. If the weather does restrict a day or so, this is a great time to seek out those unique and rare opportunities, like diving in our mangroves! Have you ever dived in a mangrove forest? Did you know a large amount of reef predators, fish, invertebrates, and crustaceans are born in and spend their juvenile days in the mangroves? Bimini has an abundant and pristine mangrove forest ready to be explored above and below the water. In a mangrove river, and under the shelves of mangrove roots, you can find stingrays, turtles, barracuda, juvenile lemon and nurse sharks, colorful reef fish, small lobsters and crabs, large sea stars, and giant spotted sea hares. You will also be surprised by the rainbow of sponges and tunicates. A short kayak paddle or skiff ride can transport you to a new world, one you may never have thought to explore on SCUBA before. Come on over and explore Bimini’s hidden treasures!
