Bimini Inshore Fishing Forecast – July 2012

Bonefish Ebbie with a prize 42 lbs. permit.

Compared to its actual land mass, the flats that surround North and South Bimini seem to be boundless. Its unique position relative to the Gulf Stream also contributes to the tremendous diversity of marine life and the health of its fisheries making The Bimini Islands are a perfect destination for South Florida boaters. As you would expect, as we head into the hottest summer months, the fish on the flats are going to be seeking cooler water. That means a couple of things. You’ll want to be fishing at first light until mid-morning and then head back in the latter part of the evening a last light. Also, the fish will be deeper in the water column and be congregating near the openings of the creeks where the water will be flowing more rapidly. In order to get their attention, you will want to use a heavier fly and let it drop longer into the water column. As their prey is deeper, you will want to use a more vigorous retrieval. Live shrimp and crabs are always best. The fish will be in large schools and relatively easy to find until they head for deeper water. The permit bite generally improves in July and the fish have been of good size.

Come to Bimini and enjoyed the laid back summer time hospitality of our island.
