August will bring some of the warmest water temperatures of the year, and bonefish and permit will go deeper in search of cooler waters mid-day. Many anglers coming to Bimini do not know that during July and August there are giant schools of bonefish cruising the shoals on the west side of the island. They congregate there for a “crab feast”. With the calm winds and seas, techniques are the same as you would use when fishing the inshore flats—go get ‘em! August will see the warmest water temperatures of the year. Even bonefish and permit need some shelter from the heat so they will be seeking the deeper cooler waters during the mid-day. Also look for moving water near creeks and channels. If the fish are bottom feeding you will see the classic “mudding” activity so you should select your baits appropriately focusing on crab and shrimp – (live or artificial). While the schools on the ocean side will be fairly large, on the inshore flats you will find smaller schools but larger fish. So the usual characters will be there to entertain and challenge you, bones, permit, tarpon and ‘cuda. Nearshore, mutton snapper, and amberjack can be found in good numbers.
