Bimini Offshore Fishing Forecast – October 2011

Capt. Billy Black with a nice Bimini mahi.

October is a good month to deep drop for yelloweye snapper. The best locations and depth seem to be 500 to 600 feet anywhere you can find a sharp drop off. Good baits for deep dropping are squid and barracuda chunks. You may also catch snowy or red grouper in the same depth. This time of year is also great for yellowtail fishing using spinning rods with any type of cut bait, mullet, ballyhoo, squid or greenies. Anchor in 70 to 80 feet of water and chum. The best time is on an incoming tide.

Sportfishing in October can be spotty for dolphin, blackfin tuna and blue marlin. My suggestion would be more productive drifting at night for swordfish. Use big large squid or bonito belly as bait and be sure to use swordfish lights strung 15 feet from the bait. I suggest drifting in 1,000 to 1,500 feet of water. Drop your baits at 150, 250 and 350 feet. Only fish three lines to avoid tangling the lines while drifting and on the bite it is quicker to retrieve the extra two lines.

It’s a quick run to Bimini so come on over and enjoy the island life Bimini style!

Catch’em up!
