Brevard Surf Fishing

Here we go surf anglers, pompano and whiting are in the surf and the catch reports will be flooding the tackle shops from now to March into April. January, a transitional time as the water cools into the 60’s and our winter smorgasbord of fish arrive on the Brevard County Beaches. Bluefish, mackerel, sheepshead, whiting and pompano are all in the surf looking for something to eat. Those of us who brave the cold mornings and ocean winds will find the pompano in the troughs on the south beaches. Melbourne Beach south are the beaches to hit and the steeper the beach the deeper the trough. Add clean water and sand fleas for an exciting day of pompano fishing. Yes, the sand fleas are present but, you have to look for them. Anglers planning a surf trip will hunt sand fleas a day or two before going fishing just so they have the preferred live bait. You say this advice does not work for you? May I suggest you get a refresher course from Capt. Rodney Smith and me at one of our upcoming surf fishing workshops?

Here’s a great deal for the beginner or the experienced surf angler. Starting in January we will continue hosting our very popular surf fishing workshops. The season kick off event will be held in Satellite Beach January 16 followed by two additional locations, Vero Beach at the Bethel Creek House January 30 and Bear Foot Bay Beach February 6th. All the events are scheduled from 9 am to 1 pm at the selected locations. Advanced registration & payment is required. For information on these programs call me at 321-777-5554 or email Rodney at irlcoast@gmail.com. Vero Beach registration and information contact the Vero Beach Community Center at 772-770-6517.

Come join us at one of these fishing workshops and become familiar with the tactics that successful surf anglers use day in and day out. Learn how, when and where the professionals catch more pompano, whiting, sharks, flounder and a host of other species from our east coast beaches. You will also learn how to preserve baits, use sand fleas, clams, shrimp and finger mullet. Learn proper casting, rigging and fishing techniques, as well as how to choose and use lures in the surf.

As an added bonus those attending the workshops will receive a surf fishing tackle package with our compliments. Don’t miss out, early registration guaranties you a spot at the workshop of your choice. A portion of the proceeds from these events will be donated to the Anglers for Conservation’s Hook Kids on Fishing Programs
