The dog days are upon us and fishing will be tough at times. The good news is that bass metabolisms are running at high speed so they’re willing to snap up an easy meal 24/7. Give them something that will fill them up.

Big worms, hollow-body frogs and jigs are good bets this month and will produce quality fish. Hollow-body frogs don’t produce a lot of bites for me, but when they do, it’s a quality fish. I always give them a try when I’m out. If you’re persistent, you might get hooked on frogs like me.

Mostly, I’ll be presenting bass a jig or big worm. My favorite worm to give them is the Gambler Burner worm, Texas-rigged in backatya or watermelon-red colors. I like to focus on big fish most days, and more often than not, that means I’m using a jig. The Gambler Southern Swim jig and the Booyah Boo jig are my favorites. I usually rig these jigs on 20 lb. fluorocarbon line and tip them with a Gambler Burner Craw. My most productive jig has been the copperfield colored Gambler jig with a watermelon-red Burner Craw. Cast this jig along grass edges and try swimming and hopping it along to see what the bass might prefer that day; both presentations usually work well for me but I always vary my presentation until I have a good idea of how they want it.

I captured some great footage using the Gambler Southern Swim Jig on Deerpoint, so check it out!
