June will bring change to the Exumas. Specifically, water temperatures will begin to rise. That will bring a slowing down of the mahi-mahi and be replaced with more tuna, not necessarily a bad thing, right? Schools of yellowfin and blackfin will be fattening up as the masses of small baitfish will be in Exuma Sound. I recommend small artificial feathers and baby jet heads. Silver and silver/blue will catch your small tuna. Purple/black and purple/silver will also be killer little baits. This time of year, your radar will once again be your best friend. Find the birds and find the fish. Marlin will be in abundance in June and July. We have already tangled with a big marlin upwards of 600 plus, but after 45 minutes pulled the hook. Put out the big lures and be ready, really ready, because when it all happens there’s no time to figure out where all the gear is that goes with releasing a marlin. Everyone should know exactly what to do. One small bit of advice is to put your camera in a bag or cigar box like I do outside of the A/C salon so the lens won’t fog up as you are shooting. Nothing more frustrating than blurred photos of your big catch! Enjoy all that the Exumas have to offer this summer!
