Water temperatures will continue to warm this month as late summer reaches its peak. If you find yourself in The Exumas or are planning a quick trip, look to great bottom fishing to fill the void of trolling. The increase in water temperatures have definitely had the pelagic species roaming to other parts of the ocean in search of cooler water. You may still find some birds early and late in the day but overall most species will be gone. Yellowtail and grouper fishing will be a great change as the calm summer days linger on. From 20 to 120 feet you can still catch fish and have a great time. Grouper will be hanging on the edges of the ledges where a white jig with a chunk of ballyhoo can do the trick. Using a small live grunt or yellowtail will also prove highly effective. A basic chicken rig will also be effective on the reef with conch or squid.

If you have an electric reel, look to the standard 500 to 1200 feet. There shouldn’t be too much trouble catching a few deep water snapper. For me, the best part of September is knowing that soon enough, the wahoo will return and so many of us will be back hard at it looking for the striped torpedo. Then the world will once again return to what I live for, screaming reels!
