Want to catch a really big catfish? You better take advantage of the feeding frenzy that’s going on in the Diversion Canal. Kind of a unique situation going on right now: because of the recent rains (deluges haha), there’s still alot of current in the canal, which is unusual for July. In addition to the high flow of water, we’re still in the middle of a pretty good mussel die off. The combination of high water flow and the clams coming out of their shells and floating everywhere is what leads to the big cat bite. Blue catfish are riverine fish anyway, so these are perfect conditions for the catfisherman to take advantage of.
Next blog we’ll talk about rigging and I’ll share a couple of secrects with you. The attached picture is of Matthew Watson, who caught and released with a little help from his mom this 42 pound blue catfish. We found this big brute at the lower end of the canal – within sight of Blacks Camp! Matthew also caught a few more nice ones, plus some smaller eating size fish that he kept and had Capt. Carl filet for a later meeting at the dinner table.
