The warm weather and the lack of grass in our area has made the fishing tough lately. Anglers have to focus on fishing structure which consists of docks, mangroves and the spoil islands. The docks in Crane Creek and Turkey Creek are holding Snook when the water stays warm. The trout have been in there when the temps are down, but move out as the water temps warm up. There has also been an abundance of Jacks and Ladyfish in the Creeks.
The Pompano bite is great when the water temps are down. From Grant to Sebastian, anglers have been catching excellent numbers of big Pompano between 2-4lbs. Doc’s Goofy jigs work great as well as TriggerX Shrimp on a jighead. Fish the sandbars off of the spoil Islands after a front when the water temps cool down. Bluefish, jacks and small trout are fish that are mixed in with the pompano feeding in the same areas.
The Redfish bite has been good for anglers targeting docks in the Banana River from the Pineda Causeway north to Horti Point. Trigger X 3.5” Paddle tails work great as well as some jerk baits. The Thousand Islands have also been productive and will continue to be as the winter rolls on. Fish tight against the mangroves and keep your baits moving slow and low in the water column for best success. Anglers using live bait will have the best success with live shrimp and finger mullet rigged on a 3/0 VMC circle hook.
Sharks are feeding near the channel outside Longpoint Park. The schools of Pogies have been abundant in the channel and the sharks are there feeding in the evening and morning retreating to the flats as the sun gets high. Bluefish and ladyfish have also been around the schools of bait. Spoons are easy baits for the pogies, for the sharks, net some pogies and rig them on an 8/0 or 9/0VMC circle hook with a short steel leader.
