Port Canaveral

Capt. Jim Ross

Mark Modowski with a nice sized Canaveral barracuda.

All sorts of toothy critters are possible this month just outside of the entrance to the port. Barracuda are great light tackle rod benders that should be stationed by many of the shipping channel buoys. Anglers should slow troll with live baits near these cans for a shot at a hookup on one of these lightning fast torpedoes. Many anglers try to pull up to the buoy and cast at these fish, but you are much less likely to get them to strike from them if you fish in this manner. Shark, jack crevalle and king mackerel are other possible species that can be encountered when slow trolling near the shipping channel this month so use a short piece of wire and a 2-hook stinger rig in your live baits and you should get quite a few shots at these various species.
