What a great time of the year to be on the water! October is one of my favorite months of the year, and it should be one of yours too. The fall mullet run is still in full effect during the first half of this month and if you’re into catching 8, 10, or even as many as 15 different species in one day, then now is the time for you to get out on the water.
Tarpon, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, snook, flounder, black drum, three or four different types of sharks, redfish, crevalle jack, tripletail, barracuda, mangrove snapper, pompano, and potentially a few others can all be found along the seawalls and jetties at the Port, and our various places along our local Space Coast area beaches. A live shrimp is going to catch just about all of these fish at the right time, and a live fingerling mullet will get most of them too. Small goofy or nylon jigs, spoons, and size 8 or 10 Rapala X-Rap lipped diving plugs are good options for those of you who like to cast lures. The larger fish will strike larger mullet, menhaden, croakers and pinfish in the daytime, and medium-sized swim baits like the Saltwater Assassin Artemis Shad or Storm 5- to 6-inch swim baits at night.
This is a time of the year to go “catching” along the central Brevard County coast. On most days it doesn’t matter if you go in the morning, midday or afternoon because the fish are usually cooperative all day long. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and get after it!
