Barracuda on the Menu?

The Boat Shows are Coming!

Just before the holidays we took a quick trip to Barbados for some great fishing. Mother Nature kept us from our target fish – wahoo – but offered up an amazing day of barracuda fishing. Who knew this ugly-mugged, mostly unloved fish makes great eating! The key is to catch them in the waters surrounding coral islands, not volcanic where they can become toxic. Details in the following bucketlist story!

By the time you get this issue, the Christmas holidays will be over, the kids back at college and life should be getting back to normal after the holiday crush. Boaters like us will be checking the calendars to make plans to see and dream at area boat shows.

Boat show season is officially kicked off with the mega New York Boat Show January 6 – 10. It’s one of our favorites. A huge show, supported by many regional businesses, anything and everything new in boating is on display. These are the boats to drool over.

The New York Boast Show is followed by our own Providence Boat Show February 4 – 7. Grab the family and make way to the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence to see boats, gear, and an incredible lineup of seminars and special events. It’s a family friendly show with lots for the fishing family to enjoy. Our own Captain Jack Sprengel will be on deck with high impact seminars —but with a twist: he’s rounded up a group of specialists who may or may not be household names to you. “If you don’t recognize some names on the line up, it’s because they spend more time avoiding the spotlight rather than calling attention to what they are doing,” says Captain Jack. “These guys are some of the best at what they do—and they come with my personal seal of approval.”

Deep Blue, Coastal Angler’s pro fish-simulator will be back to test your skills as landing the big ones in front of your peers – this can be tougher than it looks! Manned by the gentlemen of the RIPCBA it is a blast for kids of all ages! There is an entire seminar series on navigation & seamanship— so if you want to learn how to maneuver your boat better in close quarters, or learn to use the new navigation smartphone and tablet apps that have flooded the marketplace, get yourself to Providence!

February will bring the Long Island Boat Show at the Nassau Coliseum where Long Island’s best marinas, yacht brokers, gear providers and more will be strutting their stuff.

Then, wrapping up the list of Boat Shows is the Progressive Insurance New England Boat Show at the Boston Convention Center. The 2016 Progressive Insurance New England Boat Show is the Northeast’s largest boating event. It features more than 750 motor- and sailboats, plus the latest on-the-water accessories. The show also offers seminars for DIY boaters, informational clinics for boaters and sailors of all experience levels and hands-on activities for young skippers and families. Details on the February shows next month!

Tight lines,
