RI Fishing Report: Better Bass Showing Up At Block Island

There's some fair fluke fishing to be had off the south side of Fishers, though you’d be wise to expand your territory beyond world-famous Isabella Beach—a place that tends to concentrate much of the drifting pressure even though there are choice lanes of boulder-strewn, gravel bottom and other prime slabitat all along the south side of that island.Jun 6th, 2014

Fluke Facts, Tips from Experts and Where to Find them

Fluke (summer flounder) should be pretty good this year. If you have not given it a try yet, now is the time. Our fluke fishery is in good shape, so good, fish managers lowered the minimum size in RI last year and are expected to this year to 18” with an eight fish/angler/day bag limit with a fluke season running from May 1 to December 31. In New York State fish man- agers are expected to lower the minimum size this year to 18” with a five fish/angler/ day bag limit with a 128 day fluke season (dates TBD).”Jun 1st, 2014

Fish Focus: Stir up Some Shit Father’s Day Weekend

I have heard it said by at least one serious tournament-minded gentleman-angler type that one can really send his or her competitive advantage rocketing into the stratosphere by not just pre-fishing, but also reserving some of a crew’s collective “me time” for seriously high-power...uhhh...strategerizing? (I think that’s what it’s called.) Jun 1st, 2014

Note from the Publishers

We are psyched, again. Waters are warming, boats are in the water and after a brutal winter we are finally gearing up for summer.Jun 1st, 2014

Ocean State Fluke

June is the month when fluke season really begins in our Ocean State. While the commercial guys have been bringing in fluke since May, and a few recreational anglers got lucky, “fluking” really heats up now. Add the fishapalooza “Fluke ‘Til Ya Puke,” hosted by Big Game Fishing in and Snug Harbor’s 7th annual Doormat Derby in Wakefield, and we are on the verge of calling Fluke Rhode Island’s official state fish!Jun 1st, 2014

RI Report: Teen-Sized Bass In Upper Bay Bunker

One theme among a great many of my sources, New York to Maine, is their insistence that while the striper fishing really hasn’t come together in their respective territories, the "table is set."May 23rd, 2014

Weekly RI Fishing Report: 5/16/2014

It's mid-May, we’re fishing down the moon after a tumultuous week of smoking tides, silt, seaweed almost thick enough to constitute a sunken lawn, and the immediate climate of fishing opportunity is safely on the “yawn” side of the lights-out-explosion-action-blitz-bonanza threshold.May 16th, 2014

Tackling Ten: 7 Tricks for Super-size Summer Flounder

The fact is, many would-be fluke fanatics fail to engage with that undertaking because it’s hard-wired in their minds that fluking is something you do only during lulls in the striper or tuna fishing. They make long drifts, content to pick through endless shorts, fish sloppy baits they never check, lose focus early and often—in short, fail to give the quest the time or energy it warrants. The following points are meant to be a quick crash course in targeting plus-size slabs—something you ought to try before you dismiss it as lesser sport.May 1st, 2014

Ocean State Blue Crab

Although many foodies and fishermen think blue crabs are synonymous with the Chesapeake Bay, Rhody anglers know the tasty crustacean is common to our waters. Starting with the first full moon in May, adult blue crabs start crawling out of their winter mud holes to molt--making them prime prey for birds and fish--as well as the crabbers who scoop them up for sale to restaurants where they are served fried, sauced and eaten whole as soft-shelled crabs.May 1st, 2014
