Did it seem like this was the shortest winter on record? Aside from two weeks of digit-splintering cold we seem to have sped through it. Yesterday we started talking about putting the boat in the water. When my son, Chris, mentioned that it seemed like only yesterday that we hauled the boat out I did some quick calculations (on one hand) and figured that this year the boat will only have been out of the water for 3 months as we kept it in well into December.Lisa Helme DanforthApr 1st, 2016
Beat The Heat with Under Armour’s Coolswitch Series Letâs face it; you wouldnât spend a day ice fishing without wearing … Tom SchlichterMar 7th, 2016
I hesitate to label any game product as a game changer before itâs stood the test of time, especially if I havenât yet given them a thorough try myself. Then again, thatâs the banter going around about a couple of relatively new entries on the block right now so I figured they might be worth a look. It is, after all, âshow timeâ here in the Northeast and most anglers are ready to add a new wrinkle or two to their gear as a new season draws ever closer. These two items seem especially versatile and worthy of consideration. Tom SchlichterMar 1st, 2016
This has been the year of big wind as we set off on bucket list fishing trips to both Barbados and Costa Rica. El Nino has tried its best to keep us off the water; but in the end the trips were amazing, if different than what we had planned. As our captains always advise, keeping an open mind is the key to a great charter. Lisa Helme DanforthMar 1st, 2016
Itâs time for the RISAA show! That can only mean the long awaited launch of season 2016 and also that our star writer, Zach Harvey, is more nervous than a deb on prom night about how the folks that really matter to him receive his article this month. While always insightful, often brilliant, Zach really sweats this issue as he knows all of you will be there at the show to give him feedback. Be gentle with him. While itâs not exactly his first time, he really cares about this issue because he cares about all of you. He cares so much that his article is so late that you may get a chance to actually read it before we do as it may have to go directly to the printer in Pennsylvania!Lisa Helme DanforthMar 1st, 2016
For striper fans up and down the Atlantic coast, the past several years have seen catches sliding ever downhill when viewed as an overall trend. Although some areas continue to see decent scores and a few like the eastern portions of Long Islandâs Great South Bay have actually reported significant upswings, itâs hard to deny anecdotal reports have charted a steady decline for several years. With the beginning of the spring season right around the corner, now is the time to take advantage of your boat being out of the water, and tackle your winter punch list. We are all familiar with the annual painting and waxing that comes along with boat ownership, however there are extra steps to take to ensure your boat is ready for a trouble free season of fishing and boating. Below is a list compiled by the Brewer Cowesett Marina service department of 5 important, but often overlooked items to make sure you are ready for the spring run. Lisa Helme DanforthMar 1st, 2016
While I played enough sports in my years before the deck to have genuine misgivings about calling fishing a âsportâ in the tradition sense of the word, my experience both behind the reel or the gaff has shown me that thereâs room to excel (and fail in epic fashion) wherever the goal is hauling fish from the brine. Iâm talking about those rare, sometime astonishing moments when you find yourself punching 100 pounds above your weight class, or, for whatever reasons of mechanical technique or heightened, near-total focus, you suddenly perform light-years beyond your predicted median skill level. With cod being caught right now off Point Judith and St. Paddyâs Day just around the corner, many Rhodys will be celebrating with some of our fresh-from-the-sea fish & chips and our famous local brews. We asked around and got a few favorites to share with you...but first...for authentic fish & chips, even some anglers donât know that cod is the way to go! Lisa Helme DanforthFeb 29th, 2016
