The bluefish, jack and pompano bite in the last few weeks of has been pretty good around the causeways and the spoil islands in the Indian River. The bite should continue into April. Use Doc’s Goofy Jigs along the shorelines and under the relief bridges for the best action.
The snapper, Black drum and sheephead will be plentiful in April around the docks and the islands with any structure. Live shrimp and/or fiddler crabs are the key; however, the snapper will hit Trigger X shrimp also. You may even get lucky and get a juvenile Gag grouper fishing the structure.
The water is clean in the Banana River and the trout bite has been hit and miss with the strong cold fronts in March and the lack of bait in the area. Moving into April, the finger mullet schools should get bigger and the water will warm up which should turn on the gamefish. As the waters warm up, the topwater action will improve and anglers willing to put in their time will be rewarded with Big Reds as well as some nice trout and maybe a few snook. Try a Rapala Skitterwalk in Bone, Trout or Redfish patterns for some good topwater action. Anchor or powerpole down when you find a school of overslot redfish and wait them out with some live bait or chunks of ladyfish or mullet on a 5/0VMC Circle hook.
Crane Creek and Turkey Creek snook action should heat up with the warmer waters in April. Juvenile tarpon as well as jacks and ladyfish should be feeding on finger mullet. Topwater baits like the Skitterwalk or subsurface baits like the Rapala BX Minnow or BX Swimmer are great go to baits. The sharks will also be roaming the creeks looking for an easy meal. Chunk baits or live pinfish or mullet will work well.
