First-Timer Snags World Record
A first-time paddlefish snagger from Kansas hauled in a new world record while fishing Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks on March 17. On the first day of Missouri’s paddlefish-snagging season, Chad Williams snagged a 164-pound, 13-ounce paddlefish that crushed the previous state record of 140 pounds and outweighed the existing world record by 13 ounces.

Texas Moves to Save its Seatrout
The sprawling bays and flats of the Texas coast have long been considered some of the best fishing anywhere for giant spotted seatrout. This spring, with widespread support from the angling community, Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW) has moved to protect that reputation by enacting stricter regulations designed to protect the fishery, and specifically big seatrout.
Algae Blamed for Keys Fish with “The Spins”
Since early November, when the first reports came in from the Florida Keys, scientists have been looking into reports of fish exhibiting abnormal behavior referred to as “the spins.” Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BT&T) recently pointed its finger at harmful algae as a likely reason for this phenomenon that has killed at least 16 endangered sawfish and affected fish of 30 different species.
Gator Attacks Florida Angler
On March 10, a man was attacked by an alligator while fishing a pond in the Pennbrooke Fairways community in Leesburg, Fla. According to numerous media reports, the unidentified man is recovering at Orlando Regional Medical Center after the gator bit off his hand and part of his wrist after it got a hold of him when he was retrieving a fish.
