Happy Holidays! Thanksgiving already came and went and here comes the New Year. The last few weeks have been awesome fishing; dare I say some of the best we had in a long time. Kingfish, mahi, sails and a few hoo on the offshore side while the tarpon, bull reds and snook have been nonstop on the beach. It amazes me how good it’s been. This month should continue for a great offshore run of kings and mahi. Not sure if the kings we have been seeing are the start to the run or if it’s the last of the few that have been around as we normally do not see them till after Thanksgiving. Who knows what’s really going to happen this year? It’s definitely been an odd one.

Bottom fishing has been great too as large triggers, vermillian, sea bass and Ajs were banner. We should also see the grouper bite continue. Don’t be afraid to use large baits; Big pins, croakers and spots work wonders (don’t forget that the circle hook rule is in effect).

This is also the time of year that the bait gets very hard to catch. Pogies are usually deeper and tucked up in the basins or back near Cape Marina. Just speaking from experience, if you can’t get the bait go back to bed because the fish get picky. You can try the cigar minnows as usual but best bait is the live kind.

This is also the time of year the wind may keep you off the water. So get your routine maintenance done on your motors and reels. If you are in need of a good mechanic try Pirates Best in Cape Canaveral @ 321-783-0008. Across from Bluepoints Marina. (the nicest Marina in the port)
