OCEAN STATE BLUE CRAB

Starting with the first full moon in May, adult blue crabs start crawling out of their winter mud holes to molt making them prime prey for birds and fish, as well as the rest of us and the crabbers who scoop them up for sale to restaurants.Apr 1st, 2016

CHEAT THE WIND FOR APRIL TROUT

It was one of those mornings when the wind wants to blow right in your face no matter where you stand. You know the type of day - blustery and cold, dark and damp, loud like a freight train - in other words, a typical April morning for trout in the tri-state area. Apr 1st, 2016

In the Bubble

I probably shouldn’t admit this. Hell, I should probably be writing about “situational awareness,” or chanting Safety First. I really should, after way too many years on deck, know better. Still, I love fishing in fog or snow—in the bubble. Apr 1st, 2016

A Better Day at the Beach or Curtains for Local Fishing: Two Sides to the Story of Asharoken Beach

The Army Corp of Engineers is moving forward, more quickly now, to implement $30,000,000 in Sandy Funds to replenish Asharoken Beach. Approximately 600,000 cubic yards of sand will be relocated to the Sound side beaches following a bill approved by the Senate on Jan. 28.Apr 1st, 2016

Management Training: Carlos and the Great Cod Caper

For about a month (as of this writing), I’ve been boning up on my knowledge of fisheries management current events, reading a ton of backlogged groundfish news, trying to nail down some specifics about a recent crusade by several environmental groups advocate for deep-ocean coral beds that have been discovered in a number of the notches in the continental slope where we target tuna or billfish.Apr 1st, 2016

Publisher’s Note: April 2016

Did it seem like this was the shortest winter on record? Aside from two weeks of digit-splintering cold we seem to have sped through it. Yesterday we started talking about putting the boat in the water. When my son, Chris, mentioned that it seemed like only yesterday that we hauled the boat out I did some quick calculations (on one hand) and figured that this year the boat will only have been out of the water for 3 months as we kept it in well into December.Apr 1st, 2016

Word on the Bite – Smart Lures Rock

I hesitate to label any game product as a game changer before it’s stood the test of time, especially if I haven’t yet given them a thorough try myself. Then again, that’s the banter going around about a couple of relatively new entries on the block right now so I figured they might be worth a look. It is, after all, “show time” here in the Northeast and most anglers are ready to add a new wrinkle or two to their gear as a new season draws ever closer. These two items seem especially versatile and worthy of consideration. Mar 1st, 2016

BUCKET LIST – Fishing Golfo De Papagayo, Costa Rica

This has been the year of big wind as we set off on bucket list fishing trips to both Barbados and Costa Rica. El Nino has tried its best to keep us off the water; but in the end the trips were amazing, if different than what we had planned. As our captains always advise, keeping an open mind is the key to a great charter. Mar 1st, 2016
