The answer is simple and complex at the same time. Have you ever wondered whether fish can really see color and, if so, what do they actually see? Scientists tell us that fish can and do see color, but there are countless variations to what they see depending on a host of factors. The color of light varies by shadings starting with blues at the short end of the spectrum, followed by greens, yellows, and oranges until red is reached at the long end of the spectrum. What started out as a quick chance to get a fishing fix turned into a bonding experience for all of us. Editorial StaffAug 1st, 2013

I think it was 8 years ago now that I found my passion for fishing to be a little bit overboard. I know that I have mentioned before, but the need to replace a bad habit and better myself led me to this addiction that is now a profession. Thinking back to those first six months that I went from driving around the creek chasing my tail with a double dropper rig, 3 oz pyramid sinker, and nasty frozen shrimp to actually locating reds and letting my Carolina rigs with live mullet do the work. Fly anglers are as attracted to their flies as fish are, and in some cases, can be even more attracted to them than the fish. There are a wide variety of flies available for anglers, and selecting from the array can be complicated. There are different colors, sizes, and materials. There are weighted flies and unweighted flies. So, what are the best flies? The simple answer is: it depends.
Without a doubt, Alberta, Canada’s Bow River is a world-class trout fishery. Glacier-fed and flowing more than 350 miles from the Canadian Rockies through the foothills and prairies of Alberta, it is big and scenic by the time it reaches the 50-mile section southeast of Calgary that author Jim McLennan called “the Blue Ribbon Bow.” It is here in this blue ribbon stretch that anglers flock to get in on some of the best brown and rainbow trout fishing in the world.

While our reefs are home to a few “resident” goliath grouper that are spotted consistently throughout the year, one by one more and more of these fish begin arriving as summer starts to fade away into fall. Goliaths begin arriving as early as July, and are only here for a short period of time, often leaving as the last days of September tick away.Editorial StaffSep 18th, 2025
