Brookie Stream of Consciousness

The southern heat envelopes me as I walk outside to the truck. It feels thick, tangible, as if air between all things is not just dead space, but a warm gelatin.Apr 9th, 2013

Southern Musky Fever Relief

A couple of years ago, there was an undercurrent of musky fever, and then musky fever on the fly climbed to an all-time high. We read articles while tuning into the almost constant internet chatter. Everyone was talking about chasing musky for many days before even seeing one. We watched videos of anglers catching long, toothy fish, hoisting them over their heads in victory, showing shotgun poses along with new camera angles to help bring musky fever to its highest possible temperature. Musky was the fish of 1,000 or 10,000 casts—I really cannot remember.Apr 4th, 2013

Fishing the Estuaries

One of my favorite places to fish is in the estuaries, also known as the mangroves. There you can troll, bait cast or use a spinning rod and reel. For me it is the fly rod. The estuaries are the nurseries of the sea. Very high percentages of fish hatch there and spend a good part of their life there. Some never leave. This makes fishing good there all year round. The mangroves of the Mexican Pacific coast have about 800 square miles of this vegetation.Apr 4th, 2013

On Golden Pond: Squam Lake New Hampshire

Squam Lake is smack dab in the middle of New Hampshire just a few miles Northwest of Lake Winnipesaukee. A beautiful lake and a great fishery, this 6,770-acre body of water produces big bags of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, pickerel, white perch, yellow perch and lake trout. Other species include: cusk, horned pout, (bullheads) and landlocked salmon.Mar 25th, 2013

A Smart Choice-Bucktails

If you were limited to a single lure guaranteed to catch fish in a variety of situations from bonefish to bluefish, striped bass to tarpon, and snapper to sailfish anywhere in the world, what would you choose? While you’re wrestling with your decision, you might find it helpful to know that in the early days of World War II, the U.S. Government answered the question for you. Survival kits in life rafts aboard warplanes and ships contained a package of fishing line and leadheaded bucktails.Mar 25th, 2013

It’s An Addiction: The Summer Surf

The Texas summer surf can spoil a newcomer in a heartbeat and it's what the seasoned surf angler typically awaits each year.

Fish Food and Flies

Fly anglers are as attracted to their flies as fish are, and in some cases, can be even more attracted to them than the fish. There are a wide variety of flies available for anglers, and selecting from the array can be complicated. There are different colors, sizes, and materials. There are weighted flies and unweighted flies. So, what are the best flies? The simple answer is: it depends.

Spring Striped Bass Run the Hudson River

New York’s Hudson River could hardly be considered pristine on its lower end. That doesn’t seem to bother the striped bass.

Bucket List: Bow River Bullets

Without a doubt, Alberta, Canada’s Bow River is a world-class trout fishery. Glacier-fed and flowing more than 350 miles from the Canadian Rockies through the foothills and prairies of Alberta, it is big and scenic by the time it reaches the 50-mile section southeast of Calgary that author Jim McLennan called “the Blue Ribbon Bow.” It is here in this blue ribbon stretch that anglers flock to get in on some of the best brown and rainbow trout fishing in the world.

Endless Fishing Opportunities in Marathon

Marathon, the very heart of the Florida Keys, offers fishing options as vast as the crystal blue waters that surround the islands.

Under The Sea – Slings and Polearms

There’s a retro-movement taking place—a trend toward primitive hunting gear. Slings and polespears are used in places that do not allow trigger mechanisms.
